 Chamberlayne Elementary.

Seren had a 2 turn track in very open woods, aged 1 hour. each turn was scuffed into, then 3 big steps in new direction, then scuff 10. No food on track. Start & 1st turn good. 2nd turn she would have preferred to go right - don’t know if that’s because previous one went that way, or if she’d just rather go right. At any rate, she figured it out. End article hidden behind a small log & she did fine with that. I will do more of those kind of turns in the future.

Dylan had a track with the same design, but with one food drop on each leg & aged 20 min. He was slow to lie down at start so got a verbal cue, end article was great. He did very well with whole track.

  1. Darn it. She’s trying to tell us something, and we aren’t hearing it. The difference between the dog on the track, and the dog playing with the glove, is profound. She appears to follow the track left, and then abandons it…and looks for something—anything—else. So a couple of thoughts:
    1. If you look back over your tracks, are left turns generally harder than right, or are second turns harder than first? Is there a pattern here?
    2. Let’s try more articles (one or more per leg), placed (vague, I know) not so close to the turn that it tells her where the turn is, but close enough that when she finds it….and you two play with it….it makes it worth searching for
    3. And yes, play with ALL articles except first one (and play with that one sometimes). And play a LOT. She’s SO happy when you play—we need to find that energy and joy on the track.

    1. Should I take line off harness to play with intermediate articles?l

    2. No. Just play as hard as you do with the end article—make it worth the effort she expended to get there.

    3. Don’t take line off cuz we want the play to come as quickly as possible, and then we want the return to work to occur with the play energy still there. So send her back to work while you’re moving article to pocket—don’t make her wait for you to get organized!

    4. Btw, I don’t care if the article indication (down) goes away—we can reinstall it later, using article play as the reward for the down.

  2. Forgot to watch Dylan! That was great—he worked the very hard bare dirt start really well. Love the way he dug in after crossing the running track.
Check the video Betty, it sounds like you’re continuing to walk 1-3 steps after he’s shown LOS. I obviously can’t see you, so it could be the sound of you stopping.
