 Taylor Park. Short grass. Sunny

Seren did 4 start tracks of increasing age. All of my training tracks start with 10 scuff steps.

#1 laid @ 8:50&aged 2 hr. 1st leg 65 yd, food at 30, to right turn, then 50 yd to end. 46 degrees, 38% humidity, 11 mph gusty wind. This was nicely done. Both articles good. Started in wrong direction (the direction at which we approached the start flag) but corrected onto the track after a couple steps. The occasional wind gusts would blow her downwind a couple feet off the track but she quickly corrected

#2 laid @8:55& aged 3 hr. 1st leg 75yd with food at 25, to left turn. Scuffed out of turn. 2nd leg 60yd, food at 20. 51 degrees, 37% humidity, 9mph with gusts. Seren didn’t show loss of scent at the turn until about 2 feet beyond it. Checked right first, then turned to the left & quickly picked up 2nd leg. Start & articles good

#3 laid @9:00 & aged 4hr. When laying the track I alternated 5 scuff steps or a food drop every 10 yards on both legs, scuffed out of right turn. 1st leg 65yd, 2nd 50. 54 degrees, 35% humidity, wind 9mph with gusts. Start & articles good. Seren cut the corner at the turn & went directly to the 1st food drop on 2nd leg, then continued down 2nd leg, which was going into the wind

#4 laid @9:05& aged 5 hr. On this track I alternated 5 scuff steps or a food drop every 5 yards & scuffed into & out of turn. Turn was to the left & both legs 50 yd. 2nd leg headed into the wind on this one also. 54 degrees, 34% humidity, 9 mph gusty wind. Seren cut the corner on this one also, but to a lesser degree than on #3. Perhaps because food closer to turn. Start & articles good

I was pleased with this exercise, saw no deterioration of tracking with increased age so feel like my augmentation was effective, but it would probably be worth fiddling with the details to try to avoid the corner cutting

Dylan did a 200 yard straight track, aged 20 min. S5, W12, F, W12, S5… Used start & end articles

Dog park was ~150 yds away - lifted his head a few times to check out barking dogs, but stayed on track. He is getting used to start article but needed verbal cue to lie down. Indicated end article on his own. About 60 yards into track, he checked to both sides a couple of feet (as far as line would let him go), then got back to track

Age didn’t seem to be an issue

  1. Nice job, Betty! Really glad you both had a reinforcing outing with age (5 hrs! - nice!). Curious - when she veered a couple feet off track # 1 due to wind, did you step behind to follow or stay on the track?
Dylan sounds like he continues to develop an excellent foundation!

    1. I stepped behind because it seemed clear to me that she was showing tracking behavior. Plus, I kenw where the track was🙂
